Class of 186540th Class Reunion
Middleton, Connecticut
June 27, 1905The Class of 1865 of Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut held their fortieth class reunion on June 27, 1905. A booklet, published for the reunion contained biographies of the class members which are posted here.
The class of 1865 entered fifty-one, the largest class up to that time that had ever matriculated at Wesleyan. From '61 to '65 was the struggle of the Civil War. Very naturally the class would be depleted as enlistments occurred, or the boys were drafted into service. While the spirit of patriotism ran high, twenty-eight of the original fifty-one remained through the entire course, which, with seven additions during the course, made the graduating class thirty-five. The class held its first reunion three years after graduation, at which time an elegant, solid silver, medallion cup was presented to the class boy, William Barnard Smith, son of S. K. Smith, born June 22, 1866, R. H. Rust making the presentation speech. The second reunion was held during Commencement Week, 1870 at the residence of Prof. W. N. Rice on High street.
